Sandra Perković Enters History – Won Gold for the Fifth Time in a Row

The world’s best discus thrower Sandra Perković (28) won the gold medal on Saturday at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin with a throw of 67.62 meters, thus becoming the first in history, including both male and female competition, to win five consecutive titles of European champion in the same individual discipline.

In the first four rounds, Sandra Perković could not hit the ideal throw. The first attempt ended in the protective net, then she threw 59.09 meters, followed by 59.97 m. In the fourth round, the discus again ended up in the net, and then in the fifth attempt, she threw 67.62 meters, securing another gold.

German Nadine Mueller, who was leading until the fifth round, won silver with 63.00 meters, while her compatriot Shanice Craft (62.46 m) took bronze.

Norwegian runner Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who will turn 18 in a month, once again amazed athletics fans at the European Championships in Berlin. After winning gold in the 1,500 meters the day before, Jakob Ingebrigtsen was the fastest in the 5,000 meters as well (13:17.06).

Silver went to his older brother, 27-year-old Henrik Ingebrigtsen (13:18.75), the European champion in the 1,500 m from 2012, while the bronze was won by Frenchman Morhad Amdouni (13:19.14).

In the women’s 400 meters final, 25-year-old Polish athlete Justyna Swiety-Ersetic (50.41 seconds) celebrated her first gold at major competitions. An hour and a half later, she secured her second gold in the 4×400 m relay. Justyna Swiety-Ersetic overtook Greek athlete Maria Belibasaki (50.45) in the final centimeters of the race, who took silver, while bronze went to Dutch Lisanne de Witte (50.77).

Polish Adam Kszczot became the European champion in the 800 meters for the third consecutive time with a time of 1:44.59, while the current world champion, Frenchman Pierre-Ambroise Bosse (1:45.30), finished in third place. Surprising was 21-year-old Swede Andreas Kramer, who won silver with a national record time (1:45.03).

After winning gold in the 100 meters, 22-year-old British athlete Dina Asher-Smith was the fastest in the 200 meters as well, clocking the best season result of 21.89 seconds. Dutch Dafne Schippers, a two-time world champion in the 200 m, had to settle for silver (22.14), while bronze went to her compatriot Jamile Samuel (22.37).

The Borlée brothers, Kévin, Dylan, and Jonathan Borlée, along with Jonathan Sacoor, brought the Belgian 4x400m relay team a gold medal with a time of 2:59.47 minutes. This is the third European gold for the Belgian men’s relay team in the last four championships (2012, 2016, 2018). Silver was won by the British relay team (3:00.36), and bronze by the Spaniards (3:00.78).

In the women’s 4x400m relay, the Polish team triumphed (3:26.59), silver went to the French (3:27.17), and bronze to the British (3:27.40).

Defending long jump champion Serbian athlete Ivana Španović withdrew from the final due to an injury to her right Achilles tendon, so the gold was won by German Malaika Mihambo (6.75 m). Ukrainian Marina Bekh managed to jump 6.73 meters in the last round and won silver, while bronze went to British Shari Proctor (6.70 m).

In the men’s high jump, gold was won by German Mateusz Przybylko (235 cm), while Maksim Nedasekau from Belarus took silver (233 cm), and bronze went to Russian Ilja Ivanjuk (231).
