The Slovenian government pays compensation to its fishermen as they cannot fish in the Savudrija Bay

The Slovenian government has decided to secure additional funds for the payment of compensation to Slovenian fishermen, whom it believes are entitled to it as they cannot freely fish in the part of the Piran Bay that Slovenia considers belongs to it according to last year’s arbitration decision, which Croatia does not recognize and does not intend to implement.

On Wednesday, the government allocated 255 thousand euros to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry for “the payment of compensation to fishermen due to disturbances in fishing in the sea under the sovereignty of Slovenia,” it was announced on Wednesday by the government of technical Prime Minister Miro Cerar, who is managing current affairs until a new administration is elected.

The government states that this decision is related to last year’s package of laws by which Slovenia unilaterally applied some decisions of the arbitration ruling, and the funds were secured additionally because they were not included in last year’s budget plan.

Compensation to fishermen will be awarded based on an application in which they will state how they were prevented from their intentions to fish in the area of the bay south of the central dividing line, and the length of the fishing vessel will also be included in the formula for awarding compensation. Funds will be approved for periods of six months.
