Colombian Mafia Demands $70,000 for the Head of a Police Dog

Authorities have relocated six-year-old female German Shepherd Sombra, who uncovered a record amount of smuggled cocaine in Colombia, to an airport for her safety after learning that the mafia has put a hit on her, reports BBC.

Intelligence sources have stated that the powerful Urabenos mafia clan has placed a bounty of $70,000 (approximately 442,000 kuna) on Sombra’s head after she discovered nearly 10 tons of their cocaine.

The Urabenos are known as the most powerful criminal organization in Colombia.

The international airport is considered a safer place for Sombra as it is outside the main area of influence of the mafia gang, but the anti-terrorism police do not want to take any risks.

Sombra has been assigned additional police officers as escorts to provide her with better security during her service.

Sombra has worked in ports on the Atlantic coast, including Turbo, a city from which tons of cocaine have been shipped to Central America and the USA.

She sniffed out 5.3 tons of cocaine in Turbo and recently discovered 4 tons of cocaine among auto parts intended for export.

Most of the drugs being smuggled are under the control of the Urabenos mafia clan.

The gang leader Dario Antonio Usuga, known as Otoniel, is one of the most wanted men in Colombia.

It is not unusual for the Urabenos to offer money to eliminate anyone who stands in their way.

In 2012, police found flyers signed by the mafia gang offering $500 to anyone who kills a police officer.

For Sombra’s murder, the mafia is offering a significantly larger sum.

Sombra has been with the anti-narcotics police since she was a puppy.

Thanks to her keen sense of smell, 245 suspects have been arrested for drug smuggling.
