Civil Service Becoming Less Attractive – Union

Employment in the civil service is becoming less attractive, especially when it comes to poorly paid jobs requiring a medium level of education, warned the Union of State and Local Officials and Employees of Croatia on Monday.

The Municipal Court in Čakovec has announced a competition for the position of administrative officer – court reporter, with a salary of around 3800 kuna for a person with 10 years of experience, to replace an employee during maternity and parental leave.

However, although two candidates applied, on the day when the knowledge test was scheduled, not a single person showed up, the union stated in a press release.

The competition for the position of IT specialist at the same court a few months ago also ended poorly, for a similar salary, but for an indefinite period. More people applied for the competition, while only two appeared for the testing, after which the selected candidate withdrew upon learning what his salary would be.

Such examples show that even jobs in the civil service are losing their attractiveness under conditions of insufficient salaries, which they had during the crisis. A secure salary and material rights guaranteed by collective agreements are obviously no longer enough of an incentive to work in the civil service, and why would anyone carry the label of “bureaucrat” for a salary that barely allows for survival, emphasizes the union.
