The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated on Monday that it will continue to monitor the impact of the new EU tariffs on steel imports and called for “mutual restraint” after they came into effect.
“The Chinese side will closely monitor the implementation of temporary protective measures for European steel and will consult with the EU on all essential issues at any time to ensure the normal export interests of Chinese enterprises,” the ministry’s statement said.

It also expressed hope that “all countries will strengthen mutual communication” and that they will “exercise mutual restraint to avoid causing greater harm to international steel trade, which is already facing problems.”
The European Union imposed a 25 percent tariff on 23 categories of steel products on Thursday. The new tariffs will only affect imports that exceed average trade figures.

The Ministry of Commerce also commented on the temporary anti-dumping measures on imports of electric bicycles from China, which the EU introduced in May, emphasizing that they violate the World Trade Organization protocol.
