Brain Stimulation During Sleep Improves Memory

Memory can be enhanced by a non-invasive brain stimulation technique during sleep, reported the research center HRL Laboratories.

The transfer of memories from one part of the brain to another for long-term memory is a natural process believed to be strengthened by their synchronization during sleep.

Researchers therefore attempted to enhance the process of “overnight reactivation” by stimulating the brains of the participants, mimicking that action.

The participants in the experiment then detected potential threats such as explosive devices and hostile snipers while awake, and their results significantly improved after stimulation.

The research, part of a project funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, is the latest in a series of recently published studies concluding that activity during sleep can have a concrete impact on our memory capabilities.
