Drivers should start their journey with a proper vehicle, rested and informed about the road conditions, and must adhere to traffic regulations, the police urge during the time of increased tourist numbers and rising traffic on the roads during the summer, which is why the number of traffic accidents increases year after year.
Before departing for vacation, it is necessary to check the vehicle’s signaling, oil level in the engine, tire condition and pressure, amount of fluid in the cooling system, amount of windshield washer fluid, condition of the wiper blades, and possession of necessary equipment.

It is also important to inform oneself about the weather conditions and the state of the roads before traveling, and to start the journey after resting, i.e., to avoid departing for a trip after working hours.
The police also urge drivers to, if possible, avoid starting their journey during peak traffic times, such as Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, and Sunday afternoon.
Drivers are reminded not to consume alcohol before or during driving, that seat belts should be used in all seats of the vehicle, and that children must be safely secured in the vehicle.

It may sound like a cliché, but for one’s own and others’ safety, it is necessary to adjust the speed of the vehicle to the state and conditions of the road, and one should be particularly cautious during the first rain after a long sunny period as the road becomes slippery, which extends the stopping distance.
In addition to speed limits, drivers must respect the restrictions given by variable traffic signals when driving on highways.
A good driver will maintain the necessary distance on the highway and will not rush the vehicles in front. They will also adhere to the rules that the right lane is intended for driving and the left lane is only for overtaking, will not stop on the highway, will not drive in a ‘slalom’, will not engage in risky overtaking, nor will they overtake in the emergency stopping lane.

In case of fatigue, regardless of the proximity to the destination, the police advise drivers to stop and rest. Drivers are also urged not to use their mobile phones while driving, and if it is absolutely necessary, they should use hands-free devices.
Most traffic accidents occur due to human error, or gross violations of basic traffic regulations, the Ministry of the Interior warned, noting that it is undertaking a series of preventive-repressive activities on major road routes to the sea, at the approaches to larger tourist centers, and especially on highways and important state roads.
The police will pay special attention to drivers who ‘jump’ out of the normal traffic flow or grossly violate traffic regulations, which leads to traffic accidents with the most severe consequences.

In order to improve road traffic flow, the police will continuously, especially over the weekend, establish physical traffic management at congested locations, such as highway exits, junctions, and ferry ports. Police officers from the Police Directorate will monitor traffic flows and traffic management organization by helicopter during major traffic jams.
