Chinese Police Assist Colleagues in Zagreb Until August 15

The increasing number of Chinese tourists has climbed to fifth place in terms of arrivals in Zagreb, so this summer, two Chinese police officers will assist them in the city center, conducting joint patrols with their Croatian colleagues in Chinese police uniforms.

The City of Zagreb has joined the Ministry of the Interior’s project “Safe Tourist Season” for the first time, under which 620 foreign police officers have participated in police administrations along the coast so far, with 72 last year.

Officer Liang Shukai and Officer Wei Ming will work in their official uniforms alongside Croatian police officers in Zagreb until August 15, assisting tourists from the People’s Republic of China, as well as Croatian police officers to establish better communication with Chinese tourists in case of need, said the head of the Zagreb police, Marko Rašić.

He expressed hope that this project, which is being implemented in Zagreb for the first time, will yield good results as it has in coastal administrations and that the subjective feeling of safety for tourists from China will improve when they see their police officers in their uniforms available to them on the streets.

The state of security in Zagreb is at a high level, and this, says Rašić, is confirmed by data showing that crime is continuously declining while the effectiveness of the police in solving criminal offenses is at a high level.

The director of the Zagreb Tourist Board, Martina Bienenfeld, stated that Zagreb has transformed into a serious tourist destination in recent years, with a significant number of arrivals from China recorded last year, which is continuously increasing.

In 2017, the growth in arrivals and overnight stays was 30 percent, while in the first six months of this year, the number of arrivals increased by 36 percent, and the number of overnight stays by 25 percent. “When we draw the line, it means that our dear guests from China are in fifth place in Zagreb,” said Bienenfeld. It is well known, she added, that our first arrivals were guests from South Korea, while the most numerous overnight stays were by Americans.

The head of the City Office for Emergency Management, Pavle Kalinić, concluded that Zagreb has become a tourist destination that operates 12 months a year, and it is crucial that people feel safe.

This year, six Chinese police officers have been deployed to Croatia, with two in Zagreb, and two more in the Lika-Senj and Dubrovnik-Neretva administrations.

Officer Liang Shukai congratulated Croatia on winning second place in the World Cup, adding that it is an honor for him to be in our country. He described Croatian police officers as friendly and professional.
