DHL Express Orders 14 New Boeing 777 Freighters

At the Farnborough International Airshow, the largest aviation exhibition in the world, DHL Express, the world’s leading international express service provider, announced an order for 14 Boeing 777 freighters, which also includes options and purchase rights for an additional 7 aircraft. The first four aircraft are expected to be delivered in 2019.

“The acquisition of 14 Boeing aircraft reflects the gradual replacement of our older intercontinental fleet. As the most cost-effective and reliable, these freighters will contribute to our emission reduction goals and enable us to provide services in an even greater number of markets. DHL has opted for this type of aircraft for the logistics industry and has ordered the third B777F produced by Boeing in 2009. With extensive experience operating this type of freighter, it has proven to be superior in all aspects of operation, making it a logical choice,” explains Ken Allen, CEO, DHL Express.

The replacement of these 14 intercontinental aircraft provides operational cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and reliability. And, while DHL Express has primarily leased aircraft in the past, the purchase of freighters owned by us will improve DHL Express’s cost position.

Cross-border e-commerce sales are expected to rise to $4.42 billion by 2021, representing a growth of 19.2 percent annually. DHL’s investment in 777 freighters is a direct response to the growing demand for global express capacities. The largest aircraft in the world, the Boeing 777, with twin engines, can fly 4,900 nautical miles (9,070 kilometers) with a payload of 102 tons.

These state-of-the-art aircraft reduce CO2 emissions by 18% compared to the aircraft they are replacing. This will contribute to greater sustainability in line with our climate protection goal and reducing logistics-related emissions to zero by 2050.
