The disposal of ten thousand pig carcasses that burned two weeks ago at the PIK Vinkovci farm in Andrijaševci lasted three days, and the entire process, PIK officials report, was completed according to professional standards.

However, despite the fact that Agroproteinka, which is the only company licensed for the disposal of pig carcasses in Croatia, brought two containers with a capacity of 20 tons to Andrijaševci, the CEO of PIK Vinkovci, Vladimir Džaja, and his associates decided to dispose of the carcasses in another way.
Due to the inability to separate biological waste and construction materials after the fire at the farm, it was not possible to transport the pig carcasses to Agroproteinka, whose containers are still waiting for loading next to the burned farm due to a lack of information.
Officials from that Agrokor company confirmed that containers for the transport and disposal of dead animals were brought from Agroproteinka, but due to the inability to separate biological waste and construction materials, all dead animals were, they say, disposed of in a grave in accordance with regulations.
– The transport and disposal of waste were carried out under the coordination and supervision of the Directorate for Veterinary Medicine and Food Safety of the Ministry of Agriculture, as well as under constant supervision of the Veterinary Station Vinkovci according to the obtained veterinary approval, PIK Vinkovci officials say.

It is also interesting that Agroproteinka’s containers are still at the burned farm because the company has no idea what is happening.
– As of today, we have not yet received confirmation of the need for the disposal of dead pigs. Agroproteinka reacted with the utmost professionalism immediately after the information about the incident at the farm in Andrijaševci. In accordance with the scale of the pig mortality event, we brought two containers of the necessary capacity and prepared a plan for regular procedures for cases of natural and other crisis situations and disasters, said Zlatko Heruc, assistant director for HACCP control and veterinary medicine.
It is not entirely clear why no one informed Agroproteinka that the disposal had already been carried out and that instead, the carcasses were transported by ‘vehicles of local contractors who participated in the remediation and who have the necessary equipment and authorizations to perform the specified work,’ say PIK Vinkovci officials. And all of this was done under the expert supervision of authorized bodies.

PIK Vinkovci cannot say how much the disposal costs are because the remediation of the fire-ravaged farm and the demolition of remaining structures are still ongoing, nor how much the total damage is, but they believe it amounts to ‘tens of millions of kuna.’
