In May, 40 Percent More Tourist Overnight Stays in Commercial Accommodation

In Croatia, nearly 5.8 million overnight stays were recorded in commercial accommodation in May, which is 40 percent more than in the same month in 2017, with 1.6 million tourists contributing to this figure, representing an increase of 31 percent, according to data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS).

The excellent tourist month of May significantly contributed to the overall five-month tourist physical traffic, which, with 3.5 million tourist arrivals and 10.3 million overnight stays in commercial accommodation facilities, is 19 and 24 percent better than the first five months of last year.

In both the five-month period and in May, both domestic and foreign tourists visited and stayed more than last year, with 655 thousand domestic tourists in the five months, an increase of 10 percent, while they recorded 1.4 million overnight stays, an increase of 8 percent.

In the first five months of this year, nearly 3 million foreign tourists stayed in commercial accommodation, achieving almost 9 million overnight stays, contributing the most to the overall increase in tourist traffic with increases of 22 and 27 percent.

A similar trend was observed in May this year, when 1.4 million foreign tourists recorded 5.3 million overnight stays, representing increases of 34 percent in arrivals and 43.4 percent in overnight stays.

Among foreign tourists in May, Germans recorded the highest number of overnight stays in commercial accommodation, nearly 2 million or 35 percent of the total overnight stays of foreign tourists in May, with this market also achieving one of the largest individual increases in several years, with an increase of 91 percent in arrivals and 116 percent in overnight stays. Austrians ranked second in May, with significantly fewer overnight stays, close to 600 thousand, which is an increase of 26 percent compared to May last year.

Among cities and towns, Dubrovnik stood out in May with the highest number of tourist overnight stays, 460 thousand, while among counties, Istria was first with nearly 2 million overnight stays, and among types of commercial accommodation, hotels recorded the highest number of overnight stays, 2.2 million, accounting for 38 percent of the total overnight stays in that month.
