At the end of June, 18.2 percent fewer unemployed than a year ago

At the end of June this year, the Croatian Employment Service (HZZ) registered 138,383 unemployed persons, which is 2.5 percent or 3,513 persons less compared to the previous month and 18.2 percent or 30,805 persons less compared to the end of June 2017, the Croatian Employment Service (HZZ) announced on Tuesday.

Daily data from HZZ shows that there are currently 138,072 unemployed, and 16,245 job vacancies have been announced. According to HZZ data, in June, 17,482 persons registered as unemployed, which is 2.8 percent more than in the same month last year.

The majority of the unemployed came directly from employment – 70.2 percent or 12,278. Among them, 22.3 percent of the newly registered came from the education sector, 21.9 percent from public administration and defense, 10.3 percent from the manufacturing industry, 10.2 percent from trade, and 7.2 percent from hospitality and tourism.

In June, 3,103 persons registered as unemployed from inactivity (17.7 percent of the newly registered), 1,704 came from regular schooling (9.7 percent), and 397 persons or 2.3 percent came from other business activities. In June, 20,995 persons left the unemployment register, which is 26.5 percent less than in June last year.

Of that, 14,681 persons were employed, of which 13,454 or 91.6 percent based on the establishment of an employment relationship and 1,227 persons or 8.4 percent based on other business activities.

Based on the employment relationship, in June, 3,183 persons or 23.7 percent found jobs in the accommodation and food preparation and serving sector, 2,025 or 15.1 percent in trade, and 1,727 or 12.8 percent in the manufacturing industry.

Looking at the counties, employment was led by Split-Dalmatia (2,342 persons or 17.4 percent of the total number of employed based on the establishment of an employment relationship), Osijek-Baranja (1,329 or 9.9 percent), the City of Zagreb (1,078 persons or 8 percent), and Vukovar-Srijem County (893 persons or 6.6 percent).

According to HZZ data, the largest absolute number of registered unemployed persons is in Split-Dalmatia County (21,925 or 15.8 percent of the total number in Croatia), the City of Zagreb (18,706 or 13.5 percent), and Osijek-Baranja County (18,028 or 13 percent), while the smallest is in Lika-Senj County (1,726 or 1.2 percent).
