The Green/EFA Group in the European Parliament has launched a citizens’ petition calling on retail chains across Europe to take a stand against useless plastic. MEP Davor Škrlec, who conducted an online survey in June in which over 96% of citizens expressed their willingness to replace single-use plastic with more environmentally friendly alternatives, believes that this is the right moment for retail chains to embrace the wishes of their consumers.
“The alarming amount of unnecessary plastic found in customers’ shopping baskets when going to the store is concerning. Countless single-use plastic bags are used for packaging fruits and vegetables, and even food with its own natural protection sometimes comes with additional plastic wrapping. In the petition, we call on retail chains to work with us against single-use plastic by reducing the amount of plastic packaging used in stores and for transporting goods, and to contact their suppliers to request that they offer alternatives to their clients whenever possible. We also urge retail chains to pressure decision-makers in their countries, as well as in Brussels, to reach an agreement on binding and concrete new rules for reducing the production of useless plastic in the European Union,” says Škrlec.
