British Minister Johnson Resigns Over Opposition to Brexit Plan

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson resigned on Monday due to British Prime Minister Theresa May’s plans to leave the European Union, marking the second such resignation in a single day that has shaken the British politician’s plans for the UK’s departure from the EU, reports Guardian.

British Brexit Minister David Davis also resigned on Monday, stating that he does not want to be a “reluctant participant” in Prime Minister Theresa May’s plans to leave the European Union, delivering a strong blow to the Prime Minister who is trying to resolve disagreements among her ministers.

Johnson decided to leave his position a few hours after Davis, following a day in which he canceled meetings on crisis negotiations at the official residence in central London.

The two resignations leave May at the top of the government exposed to the impossibility of uniting her administration around the largest foreign policy and economic shift in the country.

The question now remains whether May will attempt to weather these shocks and remain firmly on the policy of advocating for a friendly Brexit or will face further resignations and calls to do it herself.

“This afternoon, the Prime Minister accepted Boris Johnson’s resignation as Foreign Secretary,” a spokesperson for the Prime Minister announced in a statement.

“His successor will be announced soon. The Prime Minister thanks Boris for his work.”

The departure complicates May’s position, who on Friday secured, with great effort, the agreement of her deeply divided government for the closest possible trade ties with the EU.

This has angered many Eurosceptics as they believe that this strategy betrays her promise for a clear break with the EU.
