The contract for the preparation of project documentation for the Nikola Tesla Home, signed on Monday at the Karlovac gymnasium, marks the beginning of the long-anticipated project to renovate the dilapidated house next to the gymnasium that Tesla attended.

The contract was signed with Karlovac County by the Longoška company for design and supervision POP-AP and the Zagreb-based Real group.

Anamarija Popovački signed on behalf of POP-AP with Karlovac Deputy Mayor Martina Furdek Hajdin the contract for the preparation of the main and execution project for the ambient reconstruction and extension of the dilapidated residential building at Rakovac 6, valued at around 250 thousand kuna. For the preparation of the interpretation concept of the Nikola Tesla Home, a contract worth slightly more than 236 thousand kuna was signed with the Deputy Mayor by the director of the Real group, Krešimir Renzo Prosoli, who is also the producer of the exhibition by author Helena Bulaja Madunić “Nikola Tesla – Mind from the Future” in Zagreb. As he stated, this exhibition is currently being prepared for a world tour to Budapest, Prague, and Paris, and finally to New York.

Prosoli stated that the project director of the Nikola Tesla Home is the renowned industrial designer and museum advisor Sacha Machiedo, who was also the director of the exhibition “Nikola Tesla – Mind from the Future.”

The funds for the realization of the contractual obligations signed today were secured through a competition by the Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds. Snježana Štranjgar, the principal of the gymnasium that Tesla attended from 1870 and graduated from in 1873, emphasized that the Nikola Tesla Home is associated with one of the slogans we must adhere to: ‘knowledge is true power, knowledge is the energy that drives us and offers us results and a future.’

The project and concept of the home will be presented within 100 days, Prosoli said.

The project documentation, a prerequisite for obtaining a building permit, will be completed by the end of the year, and this will also complete the documentation for applying for financing from EU funds, added Anamarija Popovački.

Although Nikola Tesla did not reside in the dilapidated house next to the gymnasium during his schooling, it will “play that role” because the house where he lived, a few dozen meters away, no longer exists.

>>>Tesla Model S Arrived in Smiljan

“Considering that the old house that will be renovated as the Nikola Tesla Home is only under ambient protection, the new building will not have to be a replica of the current house, but will be larger, between 500 and 700 square meters, and will make maximum use of the plot available,” said Popovački, adding that the new building, due to the protected part of Rakovac Street, will have elements of the surrounding architectural environment. In the tourist offer, along with the museum-educational setup related to Tesla’s stay in Karlovac, there will also be a hospitality offer.

“In developing the concept, we will strive for the Nikola Tesla Home in Karlovac to be a link between the Technical Museum of Nikola Tesla in Zagreb and the complex in Tesla’s birthplace of Smiljan. Ultimately, we aim to create a line of different contents as a whole. Thus, this should be something between two museum spaces, something like an incubator for the development of young minds to recognize themselves in such an environment,” said Anamarija Popovački.
