The first Conference of Members of the International Scientific Council (ISC) of the University of Rijeka, titled Science First – Not Prejudice, will be held in Rijeka on Friday, July 6. The conference will take place at the Aquarium space of the Campus restaurant, Radmile Matejčić Street 5 in Trsat.
Members of the ISC, Croatian scientists currently working at universities around the world, will participate in the conference: Prof. Dr. Ivan Đikić, Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Prof. Dr. Željko Ivezić, University of Washington, Prof. Dr. Danica Kragić, Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Prof. Dr. Igor Mezić, University of California Santa Barbara, Prof. Dr. Nenad Mišćević, University of Maribor and Central European University in Budapest, Prof. Dr. Aleksandra Kanjuo Mrčela, University of Ljubljana, Prof. Dr. Winfried Pickl, Medical University of Vienna, Prof. Dr. Dražen Prelec, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Prof. Dr. Igor Žutić, University at Buffalo.

Rector Prof. Dr. Snježana Prijić Samaržija will introduce the reasons and theme for holding this conference of the International Scientific Council, which was established at the University of Rijeka in early 2018.
The conference program, moderated by Ms. Tanja Rudež, a journalist from Jutarnji List, is structured in two parts:
- In the morning session (10:30 AM – 1:00 PM), in the style of TED talks, participants will present their scientific achievements through 15-minute presentations, contextualizing them with the theme of the conference. This part will feature Prof. Mezić, Prof. Miščević, Prof. Kanjuo Mrčela, Prof. Pickl, Prof. Prelec, and Prof. Žutić.
- In the afternoon session (4:00 PM – 6:00 PM), a Round Table – panel discussion will take place on the topic of the future of science and higher education in Croatia. The discussants at the round table will be Dr. Boris Jokić and Dr. Zrinka Ristić Dedić, as well as Boris Popović, the president of the Council for Competitiveness of the Urban Agglomeration of Rijeka. Members of the ISC, Prof. Đikić, Prof. Kragić, and Prof. Ivezić, will participate in this part of the conference and discussion via Skype.
The conference is envisioned as a place for the exchange of opinions and experiences among competent experts, which should yield as many quality conclusions as possible, and we believe also concrete guidelines for the development of science and higher education in the country.
