Researchers have recorded the coldest temperature on the Earth’s surface, which was -98.6 degrees Celsius in Antarctica, reports New Atlas.

The research team led by scientist Ted Scambos from the University of Colorado in Boulder recorded this record by analyzing satellite measurements on the southern continent.
They discovered a total of 150 instances when the temperature fell below -90 degrees in the polar region between 2004 and 2016.
They published their findings in a scientific paper in the journal Advancing Earth and Space Sciences.

As of June 25, the day this paper was published, the lowest temperature was recorded at the Russian research center Vostok on the same continent on July 23, 1983, when it fell to 89.2 degrees below zero.
