Transparency: With Croatia’s Entry into the EU, the Fight Against Corruption Has Ended

“With Croatia’s entry into the European Union, the fight against corruption has ended due to a lack of political will to reduce it through systematic prevention of corrupt risks at all levels of government” – stated Transparency International Croatia on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of Croatia’s membership in the European Union. TI warns of the political responsibility of those in power and assesses that the results in the fight against corruption are not visible, citizens do not feel them, and that efforts to change this situation are not apparent.

They believe that preventive bodies in the fight against corruption are not independent and that the selection of experts in them is the result of political agreements among those in positions of political decision-making to create an appearance of independence, while in reality, their work and action are hindered.

In the past five years, no law or any other act on the protection of whistleblowers has been adopted to protect individuals who report irregularities and corruption. They are publicly marginalized, and by pointing out irregularities, they risk losing their livelihoods. “Corruption as the biggest Croatian problem is the cause of emigration, as the hope that each of us can live from our own work and honesty has been destroyed,” emphasized Dr. Davorka Budimir, president of TIH.
