Trump: The European Union Does Probably as Much Evil as China, Only Smaller

U.S. President Donald Trump, in an interview published on Sunday, compared the trade practices of the European Union to those of China.

“The European Union does probably as much evil as China, only smaller,” Trump said to Fox News.

“Europeans had a trade surplus (with the U.S.) of $151 billion last year, and besides that, we spend a whole fortune on NATO to protect them,” he added.

“It’s terrible what they are doing to us. We all, in some way, love the European Union, but those countries treat us poorly and unfairly,” he explained.

He justified his decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum on U.S. trading partners. “If we didn’t apply them to everyone, then producer countries would evade tariffs through other countries, and we would lose a lot of time there,” he said.

“Europeans do not want our agricultural products. Honestly, they have their own farmers and want to protect them. And we do not protect ours,” he said.

Trump also mentioned the automotive market and cited German brands, while they reportedly fail to export American cars to that country.

He has been waging an offensive on all fronts of trade against China, which he accuses of stealing intellectual property, but also against Europeans and Canadians.

The U.S. President reiterated that European companies that continue to do business with Iran will face sanctions.
