Đakovo Celebrated City Day, Priority on Jobs to Stop Emigration

With a ceremonial session of the City Council at the Croatian House, Đakovo celebrated City Day on May 8, recalling that date from 1239, which marks the first written mention of it, and the mayor emphasized that today the priority is jobs to stop emigration.

Speaking about the current situation in the city, Mayor Marin Mandarić (HDZ) compared it to trends affecting the whole of Croatia, such as the emigration of the population in search of (better) jobs.

– We are proud of the architectural heritage and landmarks of our city, but I would emphasize, nonetheless, the human component because a city is made up of its people, said Mandarić, highlighting that their priority is “developing the prerequisites for jobs” that will enable people to earn a decent living. Only this will stop emigration, he added.

Đakovo’s City Day was congratulated by Đakovo-Osijek Archbishop Đuro Hranić, who stated in his message that for a city, not only buildings are important, but also its spiritual heritage. He urged the people of Đakovo to love their city.

– Spiritual heritage is something that binds us, so in this sense, I emphasize the importance of love for one’s own city for the common good of all citizens. It is an obligation for all of us – to sincerely love our city, to wish for its well-being, and to strive in our own way to contribute to the well-being of our city, he emphasized, noting that individualism and self-sufficiency are creeping into all of us and giving way to community, respect for others, and respect for diversity as the richness of life in a community.

Đakovo’s City Day was also congratulated by the envoy of the President of the Croatian Parliament, MP Vlatko Kopić, who said that Đakovo is the heart of Slavonia in a secular sense, but also a religious center.

– We cannot talk about Đakovo without recalling its great bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer, who has left a legacy not only to this city but to the entire Croatian people. Đakovo is also a city of Weaving, cathedrals, stud farms, and herds of Lipizzan horses. Next year, Đakovo will celebrate 780 years of written history, as well as the development of civilization and urbanity in these areas, said Kopić.

The envoy of the Prime Minister and the Osijek-Baranja County Prefect, Deputy Prefect Petar Lagator, said that Osijek-Baranja County is a partner to the city of Đakovo in planning, preparing, and implementing many projects. Since the end of 2016, it has invested or will soon invest 23 million kuna in education, health, culture, sports, communal and other infrastructure, and other needs of this city, said Deputy Prefect Lagator.

On behalf of the city – friend of Makarska, the mayor of Makarska, Jure Brkan, congratulated the people of Đakovo on City Day.

City awards were presented to deserving individuals and collectives. At the City Cemetery, the city delegation laid wreaths, and tonight a mass will be held in the cathedral for the city and the Homeland.
