Two weeks ago, we listed Croatian professions of the future: waiter, housekeeper, chef, cleaner… This dystopian variant is already receiving confirmation. Jutarnji publishes a story from Svetvinčenat, an Istrian municipality in the hinterland of Rovinj. There, everyone is building villas for ‘villa frei’. More than 30 percent of the population is engaged in tourism as a supplementary activity. The same trend is recorded throughout central Istria – even without the sea, the number of holiday homes is increasing by 15 percent each year.

Construction workers in this area are paid with dry gold. The number of current 5,500 beds is expected to quintuple by 2025, and the number of overnight stays is projected to rise from 320,000 to one million by 2030. Thus, tourism will become almost the exclusive activity.

Only the OPGs (the rare ‘villafrajeri’ who will engage in agriculture as a supplementary activity) and construction workers will feel the multiplicative factor from this (at least until the entire central Istria is ‘villenized’ to the last construction site). Blessed Croatian waiter-chef future…
