Independent Croatian Trade Unions (NHS) on Tuesday, on International Labor Day, began an action against Sunday and holiday trading in front of the entrance to the Avenue Mall shopping center in Zagreb, titled “Sunday is for the people, not the people for Sunday!”.
NHS union activists distributed leaflets to citizens in front of the shopping center to raise awareness about the tens of thousands of retail workers, mostly women, who are required to work on Sundays and holidays.

NHS President Krešimir Sever emphasized in his address that Sunday and holiday trading is not necessary, unlike jobs that are essential for the maintenance and functioning of the public system.
“It is quite clear and certain that stores do not need to operate on Sundays. Unlike all other services that must function for the system to work, stores have simply been pushed into this system based on the power of the stronger,” said Sever, adding that “financial interests cannot be above people’s interests.”

He reminded that Sunday in Croatia is defined as a non-working day by international agreement, but the law regulating retail work states that work can be done every day.
He also stated that this action will continue in other cities, in front of other shopping centers and other retail chains.
