A large number of Osijek residents traditionally marked International Labor Day on May 1st on the left bank of the Drava River, near the Chapel of the Queen of Peace, where they were greeted by Mayor Ivan Vrkić, and 3,000 portions of beans were distributed to those gathered. The city honored Osijek residents with beans.

Mayor Vrkić stated that it is sad that everything comes down to how much beans will be distributed and added that “there is nothing to celebrate.” “I would be much happier if I could congratulate people on a real holiday and if there were more jobs and more employed people,” said Vrkić.
He added that “May 1st and the celebration have not lost their meaning, although they are more a memory of the past and a maintenance of tradition,” and that he is not sure if everyone is here for the beans. “But I am sure that they have the desire and need to see each other in one place and to exchange information, to start believing through mutual relationships that it can be better for us,” concluded Vrkić.
