Access to the messaging application WhatsApp will be prohibited for those under 16 years of age in the European Union, the company announced.
This move follows new European data protection rules that come into effect on May 25 of this year. Some EU member states will be able to further lower this age limit to 13 years.

The WhatsApp application will maintain a minimum age of 13 years for users outside the EU.
The company announced that it will establish a new entity in Ireland to process user data in the EU. It is not known how it will verify users’ ages, as currently, there is no requirement to provide any documents to open a profile on WhatsApp.
