The owner of a building in Germany will have to pay an electricity bill of 65,000 euros incurred by his tenants growing marijuana because he contributed to the cost by installing excessively powerful electrical cables throughout the building, a court ruled on Wednesday.

The eighty-year-old, who denies involvement in the illegal marijuana plantation, according to the court contributed to the electricity theft. Police discovered about 3,200 marijuana plants on the upper floors of a former air raid shelter during a search for members of a biker gang.
The windowless building had a cable with a strength of 10,000 volts and the plantation was maintained by a group of Vietnamese, held in slave-like conditions. The operation’s leader, a 29-year-old man, had previously been convicted of drug trafficking.
