Greenpeace Warned Ćorić Not to ‘Forget the Sun’

Greenpeace activists on Tuesday held a brief demonstration in front of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, calling on Minister of Environment and Energy Tomislav Ćorić to urgently shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, especially solar energy.

Activists conveyed that Croatia is lagging in the use of solar energy by unfurling a 6-meter banner reading “Minister, we are late! Have you forgotten about the sun” and a large clock set symbolically to 5 minutes to 12.

Activists emphasize that Croatia has enormous potential for harnessing solar energy, but it is systematically neglected, which is why Croatia ranks at the bottom of the list for solar energy usage in the European Union.

“It is high time for the Ministry of Energy to finally discover the sun, to enable citizens to produce their own energy, as this will reduce both Croatian imports and electricity bills, as well as the environmental impact,” stated Zoran Tomić, director of Greenpeace in Croatia, on this occasion.

In concrete plans and projects, Tomić warns, fossil fuel projects such as oil, gas, and coal still dominate, accusing Minister Ćorić of not showing a significant change in direction nearly a year after taking office.

“If we want to remain a tourist country that rightfully prides itself on its natural beauty, we must abandon dirty and harmful projects such as the renovation of Plomin with imported coal or the LNG terminal on Krk and turn to renewable energy for which we have excellent natural conditions,” Tomić emphasized.

Greenpeace also notes that Croatia is adopting a new energy strategy this year and that in the coming weeks, the European Union will decide on its energy future, making now the moment for Croatia to finally engage in the European and global trend of investing in renewable energy sources.
