A New Home Awaits Two Hundred Dogs in Dumovec

At the first action of this year “Adoption is Cool” held on Saturday at the central square in Zagreb, it was highlighted that around two hundred dogs are currently waiting for a new home at the Shelter for Abandoned Animals of the City of Zagreb in Dumovec, and all those considering getting a pet are invited to visit them.

The first action of this year “Adoption is Cool” was titled “Friendship of People and Dogs” as it aimed to inform citizens about the importance of developing a culture of relationships with dogs, emphasized the Zagreb Zoo in a statement, which oversees the Shelter in Dumovec and was the organizer of the event along with the City of Zagreb.

“The civilizational reach of a society is measured, among other things, by the relationship of people towards animals. Therefore, the Shelter for Abandoned Animals of the City of Zagreb continuously works on educating citizens about responsible pet ownership,” said Damir Skok, director of the Zagreb Zoo.

He is pleased that the Animal Protection Act has provided a modern legislative framework for this relationship and hopes that the development of a culture of respect for animals will precede repression, but also that punishing irresponsible individuals will help eradicate abandonment, neglect, and abuse of dogs.

“We who are in love with pets, who love them and experience positive interactions with them, must not be arrogant and rude at the expense of those who do not want a pet. Mutual tolerance and respect are important. Our love for pets must not be at the expense of those who do not want them. They, in turn, must not judge people who want a pet. If we adhere to rules, order, laws, and city decisions, there will be no problems,” said the Mayor of Zagreb, Milan Bandić.

The Suncokret-OLJIN Association (Education for Love and Nonviolence) has published a picture book “Friendship – People and Dogs” because it is essential to teach from a young age how to build a relationship with a dog.

“Many children want a dog, but when they get one, they perceive it as a toy. The picture book reveals that the arrival of a dog in the family can help both children and adults. Dogs teach people patience and responsibility, but also reward them with affection and friendship,” said Ida Pavlić, the author of the picture book. The illustrations are by Nadja Jovanović.

Representatives of the Noah’s Ark and Friends of Animals associations reminded citizens that the phrase “a dog is man’s best friend” was first coined by American Senator George Graham Vest, who lived at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Even today, animal lovers gladly quote his words: “They strive to be our best friends! In return, asking for nothing, and they will be loyal until death.”

The action “Adoption is Cool” is traditionally supported by Hill’s Pet Nutrition and Frontline, and everyone who adopts a dog in the next two weeks will receive a bag of food and protection against fleas and ticks for the dog.
