Denmark will request that ‘hygge’ – the Danish recipe for a happy life, be included in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.
The Danish word hygge, which encompasses a mood and atmosphere of contentment and comfort, has spread around the world in recent years. Many consider this concept responsible for Denmark regularly ranking at the top of the happiest countries in the world.

The tourism campaign “Visit Denmark” announced that the country will officially apply for UNESCO recognition of hygge as intangible cultural heritage. Denmark currently has no traditions or customs listed on that list. Croatia, for example, has 13 and is among the leading countries in the world.
“We live in a time when various social pressures are increasing, and therefore the importance of well-being is also growing. Hygge emphasizes community and equality, and for that reason, it brings real and tangible benefits,” said Meik Wiking, founder and CEO of the Copenhagen Happiness Research Institute and a strong advocate for this request.
