European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker dramatically warned on Tuesday in the European Parliament that the EU must provide a European perspective to the countries of Southeast Europe to avoid a repetition of the war conflicts of the 1990s.

– If we do not open up to the countries in this extremely complicated and tragic region, if we do not provide them with a European perspective, we will have war in that area again like we had in the 1990s, Juncker said in his speech in the European Parliament, after French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the European lawmakers.
– I do not want war in the Balkans again, and therefore we must open up to these countries, Juncker added.

Juncker welcomed Macron’s speech but warned that Europe is not just France and Germany and that Europe needs contributions from others. The Commission will publish reports on the progress of candidate and potential candidate countries for EU membership on Tuesday afternoon.
