Bošnjaković: We Propose Dražen Jelenić as the New State Attorney

The government proposed at its meeting on Tuesday that Dražen Jelenić, the current Deputy State Attorney General, become the new State Attorney General, reported Justice Minister Dražen Bošnjaković.

– Jelenić currently serves as the First Deputy State Attorney General. We know that he was the president of the State Attorney’s Council and has spent his entire professional career in the state attorney’s office, climbing all the ranks – from intern, municipal state attorney, to county state attorney, and we believe that he truly knows the system and all the processes within the State Attorney’s Office, and will meet all the tasks, Bošnjaković told reporters at Mark’s Square.

The proposal will, he said, be sent to the Croatian Parliament today. The government expects an immediate meeting of the Justice Committee, which provides a preliminary opinion, after which this item will be included on the parliamentary agenda for discussion and voting.

– I believe we will accomplish all of this by April 24, when the current state attorney Dinko Cvitan’s mandate expires, Bošnjaković said.

Cvitan’s mandate has ended

When asked about Cvitan’s work, Bošnjaković said that his mandate has ended, and it is the government’s right to propose someone else.

– We believe that there will be new energy and a newer approach. These are complex and responsible functions, Bošnjaković said about Cvitan’s successor.

From the new state attorney, we expect a responsible and conscientious approach to work, as well as that “more and more related to the criminal segment receives a judicial epilogue.”

– The state attorney is not the only one responsible for the processes that trouble us and are under public scrutiny. We will work on a new Criminal Procedure Act, where we will try to prescribe new deadlines and determine where our procedures are lacking, Bošnjaković announced.
