After the allied strikes in Syria, it is up to Russia to pressure its ally Bashar al-Assad to find a way out of the political crisis, according to French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.
“We must hope that Russia now understands that after a military response, we must advocate for a political process in Syria that would allow for an exit from the crisis. France is at your disposal,” he stated in an interview with the Journal du dimanche.
“Only today this process is blocked by Bashar al-Assad. It is up to Russia to pressure him,” he added.
According to him, the first necessary step is to “start a ceasefire that would be respected this time, as required by UN Security Council resolutions.”

France believes that the strikes by allied forces carried out on Saturday morning against military targets in Syria must enable the resumption of the negotiation process within the UN, while the regime prepares for a military victory and various diplomatic negotiations are paralyzed.
