Illegal Construction: Building Inspectors Visit Donja Podstrana

In the area of Split-Dalmatia County, the removal of illegally constructed buildings has begun, which will last for the next ten days, the Ministry of Construction and Physical Planning announced on Tuesday.

Building inspectors are visiting the area in the municipality of Donja Podstrana on Tuesday, where it has been established that one investor has completely removed their illegal construction on their own.

This concerns a reinforced concrete platform that was built without an executive, i.e., legally valid building permit at a location in Strožanac, on the public good of Donja Podstrana. Another investor, they say at the Ministry, has committed to removing the illegally constructed reinforced concrete platform with a wooden and metal canopy and a metal staircase that was also built on the public good in Donja Podstrana. The inspection will monitor the removal process and, if necessary, introduce a contractual contractor into the job.

The Ministry notes that through building inspection, they continuously monitor the removal of illegally constructed buildings throughout Croatia, and in 2017, 316 illegal buildings were removed. Most of them were removed by the owners themselves, i.e., the investors, as it is more favorable for them than when a contractual company of the building inspection removes them.

Among the larger removal actions, the Ministry mentions the one at the end of October and the beginning of November, when 33 illegally constructed buildings were removed on the public good – the Žnjanski plateau in Split, and this year illegal constructions in Istria, in the area of the Municipality of Vodnjan in the settlement of Peroj.

The Ministry’s building inspection received more than four thousand reports of illegal construction last year, along with other complaints and reports of the start of construction, conducted over 10,300 inspection visits, and issued about 3,800 different decisions. Since 2013, the number of reports of the start of construction based on building permits has been increasing, while the number of reports of illegal construction is decreasing, indicating a gradual improvement in the state of legality in construction, they state at the Ministry.

Thus, in 2012, out of a total of 11 thousand received, about six thousand related to reports of illegal construction and about five thousand reports of the start of construction, while in 2011, eighty percent of all monitored construction sites were illegal, and last year that number decreased to 50 percent.
