Pupovac calls for an end to war stories

President of the Serbian National Council Milorad Pupovac stated, along with Easter greetings to Orthodox Christians on Sunday in Zagreb, that peace is one of the greatest needs that makes sense in building a good life and called for an end to war stories.

“All of us who are in public life know that we do not live in a country where the spirit and culture of peace prevail, and this has been the case for decades. Although there are many things we need, one of the most necessary is peace. We must stop with war stories, war rhetoric, and cease war disputes and conflicts that benefit neither those who are in conflict nor society as a whole, and focus on what makes sense in peace, which is building a good life and ideal trust,” said Pupovac after the liturgy dedicated to Easter at the Cathedral in Zagreb.

When asked by journalists how he comments on the results of research indicating that the coalition of right-wing parties is crossing the electoral threshold and whether this concerns him, Pupovac replied that he does not know what is more concerning, the crypto-rightist politics within the various parties that exist today, or the open rightist politics that existed in earlier periods of Croatian politics.

The most important thing for Croatian politics is that there is no crypto-politics in the main political currents, but that the main political currents preserve tolerance, pluralism, and the constitutional state in this country, he said, adding: “When this is absent, it is a source of concern. When parties appear that can be below or above the threshold, whether right or left, that should not be a special reason for concern. The reason for concern should be confusion, disorder, and insufficient care for tolerance, pluralism, and the constitutional state.”

“In political processes, what had to happen is happening, it is clarifying what is what and who is who”

When asked how he views the “disputes about clericals and anti-clericals” within the HDZ, which is the coalition partner of Pupovac’s SDSS party, Pupovac said that “those who are Christians and democrats do not do that” and that this “dispute only shows that processes are happening in political life that had to happen” and that it “had to start clarifying what is what and who is who.”

“No one looks at how much of a believer someone is, nor counts how many Our Fathers they have prayed, nor how much they are a believer by someone else’s or their own measure. That is neither Christian nor democratic. Everyone gives as much as they can, and takes as much as the rules allow, and that is important in every society, and this dispute only shows that processes are happening in political life that had to happen. It had to start clarifying what is what and who is who. Democratic politics can and does relate to Christianity, to the church and other faiths, and is not foreign to it, but democratic politics that rests on clerical ideologies and clerical types of power is incompatible with the democratic politics we have known for centuries in the modern world,” concluded Pupovac.
