One of the most influential global travel magazines, Conde Nast (CN) Traveller, has included Croatia this year among the seven European countries for the best beach holiday, recommending tourists to explore and visit the beaches on the more remote Croatian islands.

In an article on its portal, CN Traveller emphasizes that Europe is “blessed with some of the most sensational coastlines in the world” and that “few tropical paradises can compete with the magnetic culture, history, gastronomy, and entertainment of European ‘enclaves’ by the sea.” It also highlights countries in Europe where this can be best experienced, recommending beaches in those countries – France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Croatia, and Montenegro.

For Croatia, it notes that although sailors and ‘yachties’ every summer head to the Dalmatian coast in search of nightlife on the beaches, primarily to the islands of Pag and Hvar, to discover the best beaches one should sail further from the coast.

Croatia’s ‘Secret’ Islands

“The ancient coastal cities of Zadar, Split, and Dubrovnik have very beautiful, but quite busy and crowded beaches, yet these cities are the gateway to Croatia’s secret islands,” says Conde, noting that in just an hour’s ferry ride from Dubrovnik, one can reach the secluded Sunj beach on the island of Lopud.

They also recommend visiting the most remote island of Vis, where, as they say, the spectacular Stiniva beach, recently declared the best in Europe, is located, noting that Vis can be reached in just three hours by ferry from Split. They emphasize that one should not miss the extraordinary Zlatni rat beach in Bol on the island of Brač.

Of the other six European countries for the best beach holiday, in France, for example, they highlight the beaches along the Atlantic Ocean, on the French Riviera and Corsica, in Spain the beaches in Catalonia, Ibiza, Mallorca, and the Canary Islands, and in Italy on Sardinia and Sicily as well as near Calabria and Tuscany, among others.

In Portugal, they recommend a holiday on the beaches of the Algarve, on the western coast of the country and the Azores and Cape Verde islands, in Greece on numerous islands such as Mykonos, Milos, Crete, and others, and in Montenegro the beaches on Sveti Stefan and Budva with a mandatory visit to the Bay of Kotor.
