Eurocontrol: Technical failure could cause delays for 15 thousand flights

A technical failure could cause delays for half of the approximately 30,000 flights scheduled for Tuesday in European airspace, announced Eurocontrol, the European organization for air traffic safety.

“Today, 29,500 flights were expected in the European network. About half of the flights could be delayed due to the flight registration system,” the organization stated, which had previously reported a failure in the flight registration system (ETFMS).

The ETFMS system is the central system for flight regulation in Europe. The failure did not affect air traffic control systems.

“A problem has been identified with the ETFMS system and measures are being taken to return to normal,” guarantees Eurocontrol, which expects the situation to fully normalize by evening.

Eurocontrol did not specify the technical problem that caused these disruptions.

Several European airports began announcing that they expect delays during the afternoon. Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport urged passengers to check flight information on its website. Brussels Airport announced that the number of departures is now limited to ten per hour. Dublin, Prague, and Copenhagen airports also announced possible delays.

Eurocontrol is an intergovernmental organization based in Brussels that brings together 41 countries, including EU countries, as well as Ukraine, Turkey, and Norway.
