Deni Porej appointed new director of WWF Adria

Biologist Deni Porej has been appointed as the director of WWF Adria, the regional office of the global organization for nature conservation based in Zagreb, which operates in Croatia as well as in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Slovenia, and Serbia through various activities, it was announced on Monday by WWF Adria.

Deni Porej earned his PhD in the department of “Evolution, Ecology, and Biology of Organisms” at Ohio State University in the United States on the topic of invasive species, after which he became the director of environmental conservation science at The Nature Conservancy OHFO. In 2007, he returned to Europe, where he became the program director in WWF’s Mediterranean program. He remained in that position until April 2 of this year, when he became the director of WWF Adria.

“In the last 10 years, I have put a lot of effort into establishing WWF Adria, and this is a logical continuation of my career. In line with WWF’s mission to stop the degradation of nature and encourage humanity to live in harmony with it, I always strive to think globally and act locally. This is exactly what we are doing in our region, which stands out for its wealth of biodiversity throughout Europe,” emphasized Dr. Deni Porej.

He highlighted that WWF Adria “works on better and more purposeful inclusion of local communities in decisions regarding the use of natural resources – fish, rivers, protected areas…”

“I believe that in this aspect, all the countries in which we operate want rapid progress; we are here to assist our partners in the civil and business sectors, as well as government institutions. I am pleased to lead a large team of nature-loving enthusiasts who have dedicated their lives to its conservation,” stated Dr. Deni Porej on the occasion of his appointment as director of WWF Adria.

In our region, WWF has been operating since the beginning of this century through partnerships with other non-governmental organizations, and WWF Adria itself was officially established in 2015. The organization’s work in the region is focused on improving the sustainable management of rivers, wetlands, forests, and protected areas, as well as on marine conservation,” it was announced by WWF Adria.
