New Issue of Lider – Tomislav Cvetko: My 15 Measures for Higher Earnings and Retaining Workers in Croatia

The recent shortage of labor has forced entrepreneurs to seek it from competitors, even in other sectors. However, this relatively sudden shift from a surplus of workers to their shortage is the result of decades of ineffective government policy that has not reformed education in line with the needs of the economy, nor has it encouraged the economy to prepare for what it is now facing.

Tomislav Cvetko, owner and member of the Management Board of the company Oprema from Ludbreg, proposes measures that we assume could yield results, but the question is how acceptable they are to the government (regardless of its composition).

The measures proposed by the entrepreneur from Ludbreg are unlikely to be accepted by any finance minister. However, companies have already begun to snatch up workers by any means necessary. The problem needs to be resolved before it escalates and moves to the pages of the crime chronicle. Even if it requires radical methods.

To avoid placing all the blame on the state, we must say that companies also need to work on eliminating the causes of worker departures. Besides salary, insecurity due to fear of job loss may be even more important. According to Eurostat data, only 2.3 percent of workers in the European Union have fixed-term contracts (three months), while in Croatia, that figure is as high as 8.4 percent. The president of the professional association of human resource management workers, Centar HR, Saša Jurković, states that insecurity is certainly one of the reasons for worker departures.
