A group of renowned Turkish pastry chefs presented a giant baklava weighing over half a ton to visitors on Thursday during the “Gastronomy Summit” in Ankara. Mehmet Kanbur, who led the group of 14 famous chefs and is also the president of the Turkish pastry chain “Mado,” stated that the baklava weighs 518 kg, which is more than double the previously set record.

Their feat was confirmed by a Guinness World Records official who monitored the process of creating the giant baklava via video link, which lasted a full six months, reported the Anadolu Agency. Baklava, a dessert whose origin is disputed by Turks and Greeks, is prepared with a mixture of pistachios or walnuts, which is used to fill about forty thin layers of dough and is then drenched in thick sugar syrup.
– This is, of course, a Turkish dessert, so it is Turkish baklava, emphasized Kanbur.
– You know that Turks are born with sweetness and die with sweetness… This is what we convey to the whole world: eat sweet, speak sweet. This record of ours is a sweet message to the world. Let’s not argue, let’s rather sweetly address each other, said the Turkish pastry chef.
