The CEO of Ericsson Nikola Tesla, Gordana Kovačević, emphasized on Tuesday during the presentation of the company’s activities in research and development of new technologies that the introduction of 5G technology should be declared a strategic project in Croatia.
The fifth generation of mobile networks (5G) is not just one of many technologies. It brings new opportunities and great potential for development, connecting billions of networked devices, and enables significant possibilities for the development of new innovative solutions and applications, Kovačević stated at the presentation attended by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković.
– I propose to the Prime Minister that 5G technology be declared a strategic project in Croatia and that further investments be made in this technology, Kovačević emphasized.

She assessed that 5G technology offers great opportunities for development, connecting billions of networked devices, and enables significant possibilities for the development of new innovative solutions, new applications, etc.
She highlighted that research, development, and innovation, especially in the IT industry, should be at the top of every country’s priorities and that national consensus should be achieved in the development of 5G technology.
Strategic positioning
The development of new solutions, products, and services based on 5G technology will enable the creation of new jobs, and there is a great opportunity for us in Croatia to strategically position ourselves in these technologies, Kovačević said.
She reported that the company has received additional responsibilities in the research and development center related to the development of the fifth generation of mobile communication networks, which is, as she said, the most demanding and interesting area in the ICT industry.

In addition to expanding scientific research centers in Zagreb and Split, she announced the opening of a research and development center in Osijek. In collaboration with the University of Osijek, the city, and the county, we will create a model for how young people in Slavonia can find quality jobs at Ericsson Nikola Tesla, Kovačević said.
Congratulating “Tesla,” which, as he said, is a leader in information and communication technologies, Prime Minister Plenković emphasized that 5G technology represents a new significant leap in technology transformation and that the research and development center in Osijek fits into the government project “Slavonia, Baranja, and Srijem,” which aims to attract investments and create jobs using domestic and EU funds.
Increase in global data traffic
– The collaboration of the academic community, business, and government represents a model by which the most developed European countries have created economic growth and development, Plenković said.
Regarding government support, he reminded, among other things, of the law on encouraging investments and incentives such as reducing fees for the radio frequency spectrum.

– Those who do not keep pace with the fifth generation will find it difficult to catch up with any sixth, as is often the case in this rapidly changing and growing industry. Therefore, I believe we must quickly adapt to global changes within the framework of the fourth industrial revolution, Plenković emphasized.
The presentation highlighted that the transition to the fifth generation of mobile networks will bring many benefits to users and many branches of industry. It is predicted that by 2023, the number of 5G users will reach one billion, and global data traffic will increase eightfold.
