British Woman Awarded Title of Best Teacher in the World and One Million Dollars

British woman Andria Zafirakou, who teaches in a poor multi-ethnic London neighborhood, won the award for “Best Teacher in the World” and one million dollars on Sunday in Dubai.

Mohamad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, congratulated Andria Zafirakou on Twitter after presenting her with the award, calling it the “most beautiful profession”.

Zafirakou was among the 10 finalists out of 30,000 candidates from around the world who applied for the international competition aimed at restoring the prestige of the teaching profession.

Zafirakou, who teaches at a state school in Alperton, in the northern part of London, has learned the basics of most of the 35 languages spoken at the school and can communicate with students and their parents, many of whom are refugees.

She has also fought for changes in the school curriculum to make it more relevant to the students.

The award ceremony was marked by the arrival of Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, who brought the award in his sports car accompanied by police.

The award obliges the winner to continue in the profession for at least another 5 years.

The foundation was established by the Varkley family, Indians who have lived in the United Arab Emirates since the 1950s, when it was a British protectorate. They established a network of private schools.
