Matteo Salvini: The introduction of the euro was a mistake, but a sudden exit is not desirable

The leader of the Italian far-right League, Matteo Salvini, assessed on Tuesday in Strasbourg that the introduction of the single European currency was a mistake, but added that a sudden Italian exit from the euro is not desirable.

– The euro is a mistake, but I think that a sudden exit from the eurozone cannot be considered, said the official of the Italian far-right at a press conference in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Salvini, whose party received 17.4 percent of the votes in the recent parliamentary elections, emphasized that if he takes the lead of the government as he hopes, he will respect European rules only if he assesses that they are not contrary to the interests of Italians, especially the obligation to limit the public deficit to three percent of GDP.

– That limit of three percent is part of the European rules that have been imposed, criticized Salvini, who is leaving his position as a Member of the European Parliament to become a senator of Calabria.

– If it is possible to respect the rules, I will do so, but if respecting the three percent ceiling requires layoffs and social disasters, we will not accept that, he continued.

The head of the Italian far-right, linked to Silvio Berlusconi’s right, reiterated that he intends to renegotiate European agreements and rules that have negative consequences for the lives of Italians.

– If we do not achieve that, I do not rule out any possibility. A sudden exit from the eurozone is not desirable and we do not want that, explained Salvini while discussing Plan B.

– If Italy is to remain in the Union, Italian interests must be taken into account, he insisted.
