Good News for Those with Cold Feet: Sleeping in Socks is Healthy

Sleep is an important part of every individual’s life and crucial for the normal functioning of the brain and the entire organism. Most people spend a third of the day sleeping, and many of them go to bed in socks.

According to the American National Institutes of Health, sleeping in socks is beneficial, writes MedicalNews Today. Namely, this allows the body to establish proper thermal regulation and thus creates order in the functioning of the brain and body.

Sleeping in socks is also useful because it helps us fall asleep faster and ensures that around 4 a.m., when body temperature is at its lowest, the body receives enough warmth.

Warming the legs and arms affects the dilation of blood vessels. In this way, our body receives the message that it is time for sleep.

– Warming cold feet causes blood vessels to dilate, which signals the brain that it is time to sleep. As blood vessels expand in the arms and legs, heat is evenly distributed throughout the body, preparing it for sleep,” claim the National Institutes of Health.

Fewer Heart Diseases, Depression, and Obesity

According to some studies, people who wear socks to bed fall asleep about fifteen minutes earlier than those without them, and even traditional Chinese medicine supports this view.

The average adult needs between seven and nine hours of sleep. Lack of sleep increases the risk of reduced concentration and negatively affects memory and mood. Long-term, it increases the likelihood of developing heart diseases, depression, and obesity.

For similar reasons, sleeping in socks helps prevent attacks in Raynaud’s disease and the occurrence of hot flashes in menopausal women. Raynaud’s syndrome is a condition in which parts of the body, such as fingers on the hands or feet, become cold and numb to the touch, which is a reaction to low temperatures or stress.

Scientists say that when going to bed in socks, attention should be paid to several things. First of all, due to bacteria, one should avoid going to bed in socks worn during the day. Additionally, foot hygiene should be observed, washing and thoroughly drying them before going to bed. Socks should be made of natural materials and not too thick.
