‘The Art of Divorce’ – Russel Crowe Organizes Auction of Private Collection of Film Memorabilia

Australian star of New Zealand descent Russel Crowe, known for films such as Gladiator, Master and Commander, and A Beautiful Mind, has decided to clear out his collection of memorabilia from his illustrious acting career, which he has dubbed a ‘divorce auction’ as he is simultaneously going through a divorce with Danielle Spencer, reports Huffington Post.

Crowe has decided to sell more than 200 items through Sotheby’s at an auction that will take place on April 7 in Sydney, on the date of his wedding anniversary and his 54th birthday. The collection, titled ‘The Art of Divorce’, has also been publicly exhibited prior to the auction.

The collection, filled with personal items, has been gathered by Crowe over the years, and it includes items he shares with his ex-wife Danielle Spencer. Additionally, the collection features artworks by some of the most significant historical and modern Australian artists, as well as furniture, film memorabilia, musical instruments, watches, and sports memorabilia.

Some of the notable items include a fully functional replica of Roman chariots, armor, and weapons from the film Gladiator for which Crowe won an Oscar, a dress from Master and Commander, costumes from the drama Les Misérables, a satin robe from Cinderella Man, and similar props.

The couple has been living separately for more than five years, and the divorce is expected to be finalized by the time of the auction. The actor emphasizes that he and his ex-wife have raised their children together, so they are now collaborating on the auction to help create space for the future.

The most expensive piece in the collection is a violin from 1890 used in the film Master and Commander. The total value, according to Sotheby’s estimates, that could be achieved at the auction is $2.8 million.
