Plenković announces measures to assist the blocked, plans debt write-off

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković announced on Thursday at a government session that measures to assist over 300,000 blocked citizens will be prepared in the coming weeks.

The measures plan for the state to write off debts for the most vulnerable blocked citizens, encourage private creditors to waive certain claims, and simplify the implementation of bankruptcy for specific categories of blocked citizens.

In the coming weeks, the government will prepare legislative changes related to this and submit them to the Parliament, said Plenković, asserting that the issue of blocked citizens and enforcement is politically one of the most important in Croatian public life.

– In this regard, we are conducting discussions with all interested parties and groups. I expect that in the coming weeks the government will prepare appropriate legislative changes and submit them to the Parliament so that we can find ways to help those who are most vulnerable, the Prime Minister stated.

Plenković also commented on the reactions to the document of the Council for Confronting the Consequences of the Rule of Non-Democratic Regimes, which was presented to government members at the end of last week.

He announced that all relevant ministries will analyze the content and recommendations of that document, after which they will see what can be specifically done regarding education on this topic and the establishment of a civilized dialogue.

– I am firmly convinced that this was an excellent move because we have never addressed this topic in the past 28 years of Croatian democracy in such a pluralistic way, said Plenković.

He called on ministers to analyze the recommendations, including the individual opinions of council members. He urged all those discussing this topic to be “a little less exclusive and more tolerant with a significant dose of understanding for the victims and for those who have suffered under this or that totalitarian system in the past decades, especially to keep in mind the entire international dimension of this issue and how Croatia is approaching it at this moment.”
