Coca-Cola will soon introduce its first alcoholic beverage in its 125-year history, BBC reports. The “popping cola” will initially be produced and sold exclusively in Japan and will contain between three and eight percent alcohol. This decision was made by the Japanese branch of the company after the popularity of sweet, carbonated beverages with beer strength was noted, particularly among local girls.
“Until now, we have not experimented with such drinks, but we believe this is an ideal way to expand our core business,” explained Jorge Garduno, CEO of Coca-Cola Japan, in an interview for the company’s website.

The “Alcoholic Cola” will hit the market in several fruit flavors such as grapefruit, apple, or lemon, and they hope it will become an alternative to beer for at least some consumers.
He also added that in taste and appearance, it will be reminiscent of once-ubiquitous drinks like Bacardi Breezer or Smirnoff Ice, which have faced scrutiny over the years after criticisms that they “lure” young people into alcohol.
