The project of the floating LNG terminal on the island of Krk is environmentally acceptable, with the application of environmental protection measures and an environmental monitoring program, the Environmental Impact Assessment Commission decided on Thursday at its third meeting held at the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

“The Advisory Expert Commission has issued an opinion on the acceptability of the proposed intervention with the application of environmental protection measures and an environmental monitoring program at today’s meeting. Out of a total of 16 members present, 14 members of the Commission voted ‘in favor’, while two members (the representative of the municipality of Omišalj and the representative of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County) voted against,” stated the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

After the Commission’s work is completed, the Ministry will consider its opinion, all documentation, including comments, opinions, and proposals from the interested public, and will then issue a decision determining the acceptability/unacceptability of the intervention for the environment, which is an administrative act, the statement emphasizes.
Protest during the meeting
The Ministry states that the environmental impact assessment procedure was initiated by the company LNG Croatia d.o.o. from Zagreb in 2017, about which information was published on the Ministry of Environment and Energy’s website. The environmental impact study was prepared by the company Ekonerg d.o.o., which has the Ministry’s consent for the preparation of the said documentation.
The Advisory Expert Commission, which has 16 members (representatives of competent authorities, experts, and representatives of regional and local self-government), assesses the acceptability of the intervention based on the Environmental Impact Study and proposes possible environmental protection measures and an environmental monitoring program to the Ministry.

During the Commission’s meeting, a protest against the floating LNG terminal was held in front of the Ministry of Environment and Energy building, organized by Green Action, supported by the mayor of the municipality of Omišalj Mirela Ahmetović, members of parliament from the Living Wall Ivan Vilibor Sinčić and Ivan Pernar, the Eko Kvarner association, and the Civic Initiative Our Adriatic.
All of them claimed that the LNG terminal on Krk is economically unviable and will pollute the environment, and they requested that the Ministry reject this project.
