From the Shipbuilding Industry Split, the last delivery of steel barriers for flood defense is heading to Venice, completing a project worth over 75 million euros, Brodosplit reported on Tuesday.
The project to save Venice from the effects of flooding, “MOSE” (Italian: Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico), is an integrated protective system consisting of a series of mobile barriers that close the entrances to four channels leading to the Venetian lagoon when the tide exceeds a level of 110 centimeters, up to a maximum of 194 centimeters.

Brodosplit has delivered 63 barriers measuring 27 to 30 by 20 meters, with heights of 4 to 5 meters and weighing around 300 tons. This project, worth over 75 million euros, includes 20,000 tons of installed steel along with other corrosion protection works, finishing equipment, and transportation.
The barriers are for the passages Lido Tre Porti, Malamocco, Chioggia, and Lido San Nicolò, and the project plans to install a total of 78 barriers, with a lifespan of about 100 years.
Special Reservoirs
The barriers are constructed as special reservoirs filled with air or water. When filled with water, they rest on the seabed, and when filled with air, they rise to the surface and close the lagoon entrances. When the air is released, they are refilled with water and settle back to the bottom.

One of the Largest Construction Projects in Italy’s History
Brodosplit emphasizes that they won the contract with Venice in strong international competition among numerous shipbuilders and manufacturers of steel structures.

“With this, Brodosplit will remain forever inscribed on the list of companies that participated in one of the largest construction projects in Italy’s history and contributed to saving Venice from the significant problems caused by flooding,” they say at the Split shipyard.

They add that such a large project was an opportunity to employ and showcase quality work from institutions and other companies in Croatia, such as the Faculty of Naval Architecture and Mechanical Engineering from Zagreb, where material quality testing was conducted, and the company Gumiimpex from Varaždin, which produced rubber fenders that absorb the entire weight of the barriers when they are lowered to the seabed and return them to a horizontal position with absorbed energy.
