The Shape of Water Wins Four Oscars

‘The Shape of Water’ by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro won four Oscars, including Best Picture, at a ceremony marked by calls to combat gender and racial discrimination.

‘The Shape of Water’ entered the race with thirteen nominations, and in addition to the Best Picture award, it also won Oscars for Best Director, Best Music, and Best Production Design.

– I grew up in Mexico and thought this would never happen to me, said 53-year-old del Toro while accepting the award at the Dolby Theatre. Hoping that his films evoke “empathy for others,” he called on young filmmakers who want to “use the fantasy genre to tell what is happening in today’s world to take the first step.”

Another major winner at the 90th Academy Awards was the film ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’, which brought Oscars to Sam Rockwell for Best Supporting Actor and Frances McDormand for Best Actress, portraying a mother fighting for clarity regarding the circumstances of her daughter’s murder.

One of the most powerful moments of the evening was undoubtedly Frances McDormand’s call for all nominated female artists in the room, actresses, musicians, producers, screenwriters, and directors, to stand up.

– We have so many stories to tell and so many projects to fund, said the sixty-year-old actress after receiving her Oscar for the second time in her career.

This Oscar ceremony was the first after the Weinstein scandal, which revealed that the once-powerful Hollywood producer sexually abused hundreds of women, including stars like Gwyneth Paltrow and Salma Hayek.

Along with Ashley Judd, one of the first women to speak out against Weinstein, and Annabelle Sciorra, who accused him of rape, Salma Hayek presented a video against the discrimination of women and ethnic and sexual minorities.

– We have finally raised our voices and shouted together – enough, said a moved Judd.

Additionally, the ceremony was marked by messages against the anti-immigration policies of U.S. President Donald Trump.

– We must continue to tear down walls instead of building them, said Guillermo del Toro.

Best Actor

Gary Oldman, the expected winner of the Oscar for Best Actor, said while accepting the award that he would “like to pay tribute to Winston Churchill, who was wonderful company on an incredible journey.”

Oldman, who has previously portrayed Beethoven, Lee Harvey Oswald, Sid Vicious, and Pontius Pilate, stated that the role of Winston Churchill was the most daunting.

To the great relief of host Jimmy Kimmel and those present in the auditorium, this year’s announcements of winners went smoothly without a fiasco like last year’s when the Oscar for Best Picture was read incorrectly.
