Approximately 3.3 million kuna secured for the restoration of Klis Fortress

Final preparations are underway for the start of the restoration of Klis Fortress, which will cost around 3.3 million kuna, as reported by the Municipality of Klis.

For the illumination of the structures within the walls of Klis Fortress, 2.8 million kuna has been secured, of which the Municipality of Klis allocates 1.4 million, and 1.4 million has been approved from European Union funds. The tender for these works is expected to be announced in the next two months, Hina learns from the Municipality of Klis. The works on illuminating the walls within Klis Fortress should be completed by the end of the year. The illumination of the structures within the walls of Klis Fortress will increase visitor safety and will also contribute to extending the working hours at the fortress.

According to information from the Municipality of Klis, the Ministry of Culture has approved more than 500,000 kuna for conservation-archaeological works, which will be carried out by the Conservation Department from Split, which will decide on the course of the works that should be completed by March 2019.

This year marks the 370th anniversary of the liberation of the Croatian historical and royal city of Klis from Turkish conquerors, who held Klis under their control for 110 years. On this occasion, a two-day historical and theatrical spectacle “Uskok Battle for Klis” will be held on July 27 and 28, organized by the Historical Unit of Klis Uskoks, with more than 250 members of historical units and knightly groups from all over Croatia and Europe participating. The traditional event “Book of the Mediterranean” will also be held, organized by the Literary Circle from Split, which will include a scientific gathering on the occasion of the 370th anniversary of the liberation of Klis from the Turks.

Klis Fortress is located at the pass between Kozjak on the western side and Mosor on the eastern side, and due to its strategic position, battles have been fought in this area for centuries. According to historical sources, Klis Fortress, one of the most prominent fortifications in Croatia, is first mentioned in the fifth century. It was particularly important during the Turkish conquests, and its most glorious period was during the time of Captain Petar Kružić (1520-1537), who died in 1537 when the Turks also conquered it. The fortress was liberated by the Venetians in 1648.

Academician historian Stjepan Krasić recently published a book titled “The Kandian War and the Liberation of Klis from the Turks in 1648,” and the Municipality of Klis will organize a ceremonial promotion of this book on March 23.
