Chilean actress Daniela Vega will be the first openly transgender person to participate in the 90th Academy Awards ceremony.
The Academy has announced that Vega, who stars in the film ‘A Fantastic Woman’ nominated for Best Foreign Film, will be among those presenting Oscars.
“This is wonderful,” said transgender journalist Zoey Tur to dpa. “Let’s hope this isn’t the last time,” she warned.
The drama ‘A Fantastic Woman’, directed by Sebastian Lelio, tells the story of a transgender waitress and singer in a nightclub whose life is turned upside down after her former boyfriend dies in her arms.
“The fact that I am transgender gives the story a higher level of credibility,” Vega said in January to Vanity Fair. “But more importantly, it opens doors to the film world that have never been opened before because I am a transgender actress playing a transgender woman.”
Vega is an opera singer and theater actress in Chile.
